It's a '70s streetrace movie filmed in Paris at around 5:30 in the morning, and apparently it's got a strong cult status among the streetracing community. So that's why it's pretty surprising to me that I really did enjoy this, maybe for reasons all unintended by the maker.
However, this guy obviously did have some sense in his head as to establishing mood in the film, even if only the ending is taken into account for that. This leaves me kind of wondering whether he actively meant for the rest of it to end up like it did, what with the headlights doing less to brighten the area in the middle of the camera and more to cast a shadow all around the corners, and how that effect worked so well with the beautiful scenery*, and the sound of the motor (which seemed gaudy and annoying at first, but it soon became almost vital to my enjoyment of the film). But I suppose I enjoy that kind of ambiguity anyway, and if I'm the only one who likes this movie then that might be to blame. :P
*Uninteresting fact: every time I see the Arc de Triomphe, in my head I hear Black Francis saying, "The Arch of Triumph!" If you've seen the extras on the Pixies DVD, you'll understand this. If you haven't, you should so you can hear Black Francis say "The Arch of Triumph!" every time you see the Arc de Triomphe.
